Smart collar spec sheets are crowded with numbers that make almost no difference to how the collar performs on a walk. These are the four things that do.
1. How the collar reports position
Mobile data works anywhere with phone signal. Bluetooth only works near your phone. Radio-based systems work without either but need a handheld receiver.
2. Battery behaviour, not battery size
A well-designed collar reports rarely at home and often when the dog leaves a safe zone. That behaviour, not milliamp hours, decides whether you charge weekly or nightly.
3. Activity data you will actually read
Step counts age quickly. Sleep quality, resting heart rate and a simple weekly trend are the metrics owners return to.
4. Build and fit
Look for a stainless or coated buckle, a breakaway fitting for cats, and a housing that matches the collar width. Cheap plastic clips are the first thing to fail.
